Role of shear layer instability in the transition of boundary layer on a bluff body

چکیده
The boundary layer on a circular cylinder undergoes a transition to turbulence at, approximately, Re=2 x 105. This is accompanied with a significant reduction in drag. Using a stabilized finite element formulation, we have conducted two-dimensional computations for flow past a cylinder using a very fine mesh close to it. It has been shown by researchers earlier that the genesis and formation of shear layer vortices is primarily a two dimensional phenomenon. Our present computations confirm this finding. Shown in Figure 1 is the vorticity field for the flow past a cylinder at various Reynolds numbers. With an increase in Re the transition point of the shear layer, beyond which it is unstable, moves upstream. At the critical Re, the shear layer instability moves very close to the cylinder surface and the shear layer vortices interact with the separated boundary layer. These eddies result in mixing of the flow in the boundary layer with the more energetic outer flow causing the boundary layer to reattach. The narrowing of wake and delay of flow separation, at Re=106, is clearly observed from the figure. At Re=107 the shear layer instability moves further upstream. A finite element mesh with 116,116 nodes and 231,484 triangular elements has been used to solve the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations in primitive variables.

متن کاملNumerical Simulation of Separation Bubble on Elliptic Cylinders Using Three-equation k-? Turbulence Model
Occurrence of laminar separation bubbles on solid walls of an elliptic cylinder has been simulated using a recently developed transitional model for boundary layer flows. Computational method is based on the solution of the Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) equations and the eddy-viscosity concept. Transitional model tries to simulate streamwise fluctuations, induced by freestream turbulen...
متن کاملDNS Study on the Evolution of Vortical Packets and Their Interactions in Boundary Layer
Vortical structures like the Λ-vortex and ring-like vortex play a critical role in the boundary layer transition process. In this paper, the mechanisms of the formation of the vortical packets and their mutual interactions are studied by DNS. It is found that the shear layer instability is the key of the vortex generation. On the other hand, in the process of evolution of vortical packets, the ...

The paper concerns a rational and physically feasible description of gross separation from the surface of a plane and more-or-less bluff obstacle in an incompressible and otherwise perfectly uniform stream for arbitrarily large values of the globally formed Reynolds number. The analysis is initialized by a remarkable conclusion drawn from recent theoretical results that is corroborated by exper...
متن کاملInfluence of Rigidity, Irregularity and Initial Stress on Shear Waves Propagation in Multilayered Media
The propagation of shear waves in an anisotropic fluid saturated porous layer over a prestressed semi-infinite homogeneous elastic half-space lying under an elastic homogeneous layer with irregularity present at the interface with rigid boundary has been studied. The rectangular irregularity has been taken in the half-space. The dispersion equation for shear waves is derived by using the pertur...
